When I began creating my own visual inspiration to use later on in the development of my campaign, I started out with the idea to create a mind map using pictures which I believed would be more useful in early development as I could skim over the visuals without having to read anything to easily form ideas. I started this mind map out with the centre title of ‘100 Year Campaign’ so I wouldn’t drift from the main idea of displaying little moments of Hull’s development as a whole in the past 100 years. I then began to research Hull’s earliest forms of income to see how the city had evolved into what it is today so I could take photos that related to these industries that I liked due to colour, composition or the various textures included in them and paste them in one place to create the bulk of the mood board. This method of choosing photos is what led me to mainly focus on Hull’s fishing industry as I realised I could incorporate it much more within my work due to the multiple aspects to fishing such as the fish, equipment and boats themselves which I thought would make good visual designs.

Once I had some visual ideas I could choose from, I decided to make another board but of my own small designs and more ideas on what I could include within my campaign such as colour palettes and fonts. When creating this, I realised how much I could lean into the fishing industry design wise due to the natural textures found as well as the simplistic designs I was able to create. I also decided to use the colour palette and fonts used in Hull University’s existing brand identity to not stray too much from the current aesthetic the University has which I believe would make the campaign look out of place and unappealing.

Once I had some of my own visual components designed, I decided to create some banner ideas for my microsite to explore my ideas for the composition and how to fit everything together without looking cramped or out of place. Despite not being sure on some of the illustrations I created, I still wanted to include them on a design to see what I can work on further into my development.
